Lock on luggage when you travel?

I travel (U.S.) soon and wonder if I'm allowed to have a lock on my luggage? I was going to buy TSA approved, but have heard different things, they are not accepted, they will be cut, etc. Someone Could it be that travels frequently to give me their opinion on this subject! Am I allowed to have a lock? If yes, would you advise me to use it? Why or why not? Thank you!

I am traveling to Mexico this weekend and I was told that I could put a lock if I wanted. Any kind of lock work. However, TSA approved locks are better because the guys at the airport security can open them without breaking them. Then, because they can open easily, there is no real point in locking your baggage. All valuables (MP3 players, phones, cameras, jewelry, clothing preferred, etc.) should be put in your luggage. Be sure to put the batteries in your carry on. The only thing that is absolutely necessary in your luggage liquid is stored in a container larger than 3 ounces
